Hi.

Welcome to the Curiosity Carnival. An exploration into the fun and messy behind-the-scenes of being a STEM teacher in San Francisco.

Moon Log Site got Featured!

I woke up this morning to the constant pinging of my phone alerting me of incoming email notifications. My moon log website is being followed by strangers, not only our 6th graders? After looking into it a little more, I learned that I am the #1 featured website of the week on Zapd. http://blog.zapd.com/zapd-top-10-week-of-december-2-2012/

“Painted Moon Log” by Jessica Tea

Painted Moon Log is a really brilliant idea. Jessica takes her daily journal entries about the moon, and pairs them with adorable digital paintings of her sights during the day. It’s an enchanting little story that you can follow along, and maybe learn a thing or two about the moon cycle.

This moon observation log was a joint project I pitched to the dynamic duo, Dave & Richard, about integrating communication skills with scientific observations. The 6th graders are busy peering up at the sky to find and document the moon's path and change in shape. Right now, their logs are being evaluated for their use of descriptive and powerful words. Soon, we will analyze their observations to come up with an understanding of why the moon has phases.

As I fill out my daily moon journal, you and your students can follow along my journey to chronicle the last full moon to full moon cycle of 2012. On any web browser visit http://jessicatea.zapd.com/painted-moon-log or with the Zapd app follow: JessicaTea

Enjoy!

p.s. Zapd is an iPad app that easily builds webpages. It allows for social integrations such as following, liking, and commenting. Additionally, it allows multiple users to collaborate on websites. The 6th graders are currently using this app to write up their research reports from their star and galaxy inquiries. Also, my digital journal was created using the iPad app Paper.
